TallyPrime is the dominant accounting platform in Indian retail, and its jewellery-specific tooling has genuinely matured — piece-wise inventory by weight and purity, making-charge calculations, karigar job-work tracking, and GST return uploads are all part of its jewellery offering today. This isn't a case of Tally lacking jewellery features; it's a case of two different starting points arriving at overlapping ground.
Tally's core identity is accounting software that added deep jewellery-specific extensions on top — GSTR-1 uploads without leaving the app, making-charge flexibility (percentage, per-gram, or fixed), and artisan/job-work tracking with material usage and wastage records. For a business that thinks of itself primarily in accounting terms, and wants the accounting engine to be the most mature part of the system, that heritage is a real advantage.
CaratOS was built around the operational, conversational side of running a jewellery business first — inventory and GST invoicing exist alongside a WhatsApp AI that reads and writes to the database in plain language, a purpose-built kitty scheme manager, and Shopify sync for showrooms selling online. It reads more like a cloud-native operations layer than an accounting package with retail features bolted on.
| Tally (jewellery tooling) | CaratOS | |
|---|---|---|
| Core identity | Accounting platform with jewellery-specific extensions | Cloud-native operations suite built jewellery-first |
| Send invoices/reports to customers | Two-way: query and update records with plain-language messages | |
| Karigar/job-work | Tracks material issued/received per artisan | Job-level tracking with due dates and product-level status, creatable via WhatsApp |
| Gold-saving schemes | Not a core focus area of the jewellery module | Dedicated Kitty Manager with instalment-level tracking |
| Online/D2C sync | Not a primary focus | Shopify sync for omnichannel sellers |
| Deployment heritage | Desktop-first, extended to cloud/mobile | Cloud-first from the start |
